“Kochi Gets Ready to Welcome the Dalai Lama”
Kochi city in the southern Indian state of Kerala is getting ready to welcome His Holines the Dalai Lama who will be on a one day visit to city on September 04, 2010. The 75-year old head of state and spiritual leader of Tibet, Tenzin Gyatso, the XIV Dalai Lama of Tibet will have a tight schedule in city with programmes lined up.
On September 04, 2010, His Holiness will deliver the inaugural lecture at “Beyond Conflict to Reconciliation: The Challenge of the 21st Century” organised by International Association for Religious Freedom at Catholic Renewal Center, Ernakulam. The four-day seminar on religious freedom will have social and religious leaders from all over the world to attend. About 600 peace-makers from different parts of the globe are expected to take part in the Congress to discuss issues such as religion and human rights. His Holiness the Dalai Lama will also give a private audience to Friends of Tibet and address a gathering of Friends of Tibet members.
A series of Tibet programmes are also lined up to welcome His Holiness. Friends of Tibet in association with Kashi will hold an exhibition of selected cartoons on the Tibet issue (1950-2005) and the tumultuous Indo-Chinese relations by renowned Indian cartoonists at the Kashi Art Cafe, Burgher Street, Fort Kochi from August 29, 2010 till September 04, 2010. The selected cartoons are from some of known cartoonists of our times - Shankar, Ranga, OV Vijayan, RK Laxman, Ravi Shankar, Mario Miranda, Rajinder Puri, Prriya Raj, Yesudasan, Nanda Soobben, Abe Gowda, Kaak, Madhu Omalloor, Balu, Thommy, Ponnappa, Morparia and Prakash Shetty. The introduction and text of the 'Indian Cartoonists on Tibet' are by Claude Arpi, Tibet expert, who has authored several books on Tibet. The exhibition will be inaugurated by renowned cartoonist Yesudasan on August 29, 2010 at 6pm.
The Kochi premier of the documentary ‘The Sun Behind The Clouds’ will be held at the Kashi Art CafĂ© on August 29, 2010 at 6pm. Winner of the Silver Conch Award at the 11th Mumbai International Film Festival and the Best Documentary at Trivandrum International Documentary Festival, "The Sun Behind the Clouds" had its North American premiere at the recently concluded Palm Springs International Film Festival in California where it became the focus of much media attention when the Chinese government tried to get the festival to remove the film, ostensibly for its anti-China stand. When the festival refused, two Chinese films were withdrawn in retaliation. The film had three sold-out screenings and a fourth was added when it was voted one of the Best of the Fest films.
Friends of Tibet is also organising an exhibition of historic photographs on Tibet and the Dalai Lama and artifacts from Tibet. These will also be on display at The Gatway Hotel of Taj at Marine Drive, Ernakulam on September 04, 2010. The artifacts including coins and currencies from the then Independent Tibet, a radio used by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the 60s, the Banned Tibetan National Flag from occupied Tibet, rare Photos of the Dalai Lama etc will be on display at Ernakulam city from September 1-3, 2010.
All Friends of Tibet programmes in city will remain open to public.
